Verify every subsidy requirement before finalising your residential solar project

Signing a solar contract before confirming subsidy readiness is one of the most common mistakes we see Indian homeowners make. A rejected application, a missing document, or a vendor who cannot process PM Surya Ghar paperwork can delay your project by months and cost you the subsidy entirely. We created this checklist so you can verify every eligibility, documentation, and approval requirement before you finalise your residential solar project.

TL;DR — Summary

  • What is the government solar subsidy for homes? — Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Yojana, homeowners receive ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third kW, capped at ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. The subsidy is credited directly to the homeowner's bank account after installation and inspection.
  • Why check readiness before finalising? — Subsidy applications are rejected for incomplete documents, ineligible property types, or vendors not listed on the MNRE portal. Confirming readiness before you sign a contract prevents delays, rework, and lost subsidy amounts.
  • What documents do you need? — You typically need your electricity bill in your name, Aadhaar, PAN, bank passbook, property ownership proof, and a recent photograph of your rooftop. Missing even one document can stall the application at the portal stage.
  • Does vendor choice affect subsidy eligibility? — Yes. Only MNRE approved vendors can process subsidy applications through the national portal. If your vendor is not listed, your installation may proceed but the subsidy claim will not.
  • What is the right sequence? — Register on the PM Surya Ghar portal first, get feasibility approval from your DISCOM, then finalise your vendor and installation. Reversing this order is the single biggest cause of subsidy claim failures.

Who qualifies for the subsidy?

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Yojana targets individual residential consumers with a grid connected electricity connection. The connection must be in the applicant's name. Apartments in group housing societies follow a different process and are often excluded from the individual subsidy route.

Your property must be an independent house, villa, or row house with a rooftop you own or have documented rights to use. Rented properties generally do not qualify unless the electricity connection and rooftop rights are formally in the tenant's name.

The subsidy applies only to on grid (grid connected) solar systems. Off grid or hybrid systems with battery backup are not covered under the current scheme structure. If your goal is bill savings through net metering, on grid is the standard path and the one that qualifies.

Subsidy readiness checklist

Before you sign any vendor agreement, walk through every item below. Each one represents a real rejection or delay reason we have seen in the field.

1. Confirm electricity bill ownership

Your latest electricity bill must show your name as the consumer. If the connection is in a family member's name, the subsidy application must be filed in that person's name, not yours. Mismatched names between the portal registration and the DISCOM records cause automatic rejections.

2. Gather identity and financial documents

Keep these ready before you start the portal registration: Aadhaar card, PAN card, bank passbook or cancelled cheque (the subsidy amount is transferred directly to this account), and a passport size photograph. The bank account must be linked to your Aadhaar for direct benefit transfer.

3. Prepare property and rooftop proof

You need proof of property ownership or a registered lease agreement that grants rooftop access. A recent photograph of your rooftop, showing the area available for panel installation, is required during the technical feasibility stage. If your rooftop has obstructions (water tanks, staircase structures, satellite dishes), photograph those too so the site assessment is accurate.

4. Register on the PM Surya Ghar portal

Visit the national portal and complete your registration using your DISCOM consumer number and Aadhaar. This step generates an application ID. Do not skip this step or leave it to your vendor. The portal registration must happen before installation begins for the subsidy to be valid.

5. Get DISCOM feasibility approval

After portal registration, your local DISCOM (electricity distribution company) reviews your application for technical feasibility. This includes checking whether your area's grid infrastructure can support net metering. Feasibility approval can take a few days to a few weeks depending on the DISCOM. Do not finalise your vendor or schedule installation until this approval is in hand.

6. Verify your vendor is MNRE approved

This is non negotiable. Only vendors listed on the MNRE portal can process subsidy applications. Ask your vendor for their MNRE registration number and verify it on the portal yourself. We are listed on the MNRE portal, and we handle the full approvals process as part of our installation service, so our customers do not need to chase paperwork separately.

7. Confirm system size and subsidy amount

The subsidy structure is tiered. For the first 2 kW, you receive ₹30,000 per kW (₹60,000 total). For the third kW, you receive ₹18,000. Systems of 3 kW and above are capped at ₹78,000 total subsidy. Larger systems (5 kW, 7 kW) still receive only ₹78,000. Confirm this with your vendor so your cost expectations are accurate before you commit.

Decision matrix: readiness scoring

Use this table to score your own readiness before signing a contract. Each criterion is either confirmed, pending, or not started. If any row is "not started," do not finalise your vendor agreement until it moves to at least "pending."

Readiness criterionRisk if skipped
Electricity bill in applicant's nameApplication rejected at portal stage

Why process sequence matters

The most frequent subsidy failures happen because homeowners install first and apply later. The correct sequence is: register on the portal, receive DISCOM feasibility approval, select an MNRE approved vendor, install the system, request DISCOM inspection and net meter installation, then claim the subsidy through the portal after the inspection report is uploaded.

Reversing any of these steps, especially installing before portal registration, can disqualify your subsidy claim entirely. The portal tracks timestamps, and DISCOM inspectors verify that the installation happened after feasibility approval was granted.

How vendor choice affects your subsidy

Not every solar installer can process a PM Surya Ghar subsidy application. The vendor must be registered on the MNRE portal, and the system components (panels, inverter, structure) must meet MNRE and BIS standards. If your vendor uses non certified components, the DISCOM inspection may fail, and your subsidy claim will be rejected.

We handle the entire approvals chain, from portal registration support to DISCOM coordination to post installation inspection scheduling. Our systems use MNRE compliant components, and every installation is designed to pass the DISCOM inspection on the first attempt. This is part of what we mean by managed solar onboarding: you should not have to become an expert in government portals to get the subsidy you are entitled to.

Common mistakes that delay subsidy

Based on patterns we see across our installations in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, and Nagpur, these are the most common errors homeowners make.

Filing the application with a name that does not match the electricity bill. Choosing a vendor who is not on the MNRE portal and discovering this only after installation. Skipping the DISCOM feasibility step and assuming net metering will be approved automatically. Not linking the bank account to Aadhaar before the subsidy disbursement stage. Installing a system size without understanding the subsidy cap, then expecting a higher reimbursement.

Each of these mistakes is preventable with the checklist above. The goal is to complete every verification before you pay a booking amount or sign a contract.

What happens after installation

Once your system is installed, the vendor uploads commissioning details to the PM Surya Ghar portal. Your DISCOM then schedules an inspection and installs the net meter. After the inspection report is uploaded and verified, the subsidy amount is transferred directly to your Aadhaar linked bank account. This post installation process can take 30 to 90 days depending on your DISCOM's processing speed.

During this period, your system is already generating power and offsetting your electricity bill through net metering. The subsidy is a one time reimbursement, not a discount on the installation invoice. Your vendor's quote should reflect the full system cost, with the subsidy arriving separately after government verification.

If you want a partner who manages this entire lifecycle, from pre installation readiness through post installation subsidy processing, that is exactly how we operate. Our team tracks every application through the portal and follows up with the DISCOM on your behalf.

Completing this checklist before you finalise your residential solar project protects your subsidy eligibility, prevents costly delays, and ensures your system is installed by a vendor who can actually process the government benefit. Print it, score each row honestly, and do not sign until every criterion is at least pending. The subsidy exists to make solar more affordable for Indian homeowners. The checklist exists to make sure you actually receive it.
