How does rooftop solar for homes work? A simple explainer

Sunlight flows from panels through an inverter into your home and grid

Your electricity bill keeps climbing, your rooftop sits empty, and you have heard that solar can fix both. But before you request a quote or compare system sizes, you need a clear picture of what actually happens between sunlight hitting your roof and your meter slowing down. We built this explainer so every first time buyer can walk into the solar conversation with confidence.

TL;DR - Summary

  • How does rooftop solar generate power? Solar panels on your roof convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter then converts that DC into alternating current (AC), which is the type your home appliances use.
  • What happens to the power I generate? Your home consumes the solar electricity first. Any surplus flows out through a net meter to the grid, earning you credits that offset your electricity bill.
  • Do I need batteries for home solar? Most residential systems in India are on grid, meaning they work without batteries. The grid itself acts as your storage. During a power cut, an on grid system shuts off for safety.
  • What role does the net meter play? A bidirectional net meter tracks electricity flowing in both directions. Units you export reduce units you are billed for, sometimes bringing your bill close to zero.

Sunlight to electricity

Solar panels contain photovoltaic cells made from silicon. When sunlight strikes these cells, it knocks electrons loose, creating a flow of DC electricity. Panels generate the most power during peak sunlight hours, roughly 9 AM to 4 PM in most Indian cities.

The amount generated depends on panel wattage, roof orientation, shading, and local weather. A typical 3 kW system on an unshaded south facing roof in Bengaluru or Hyderabad can produce around 360 to 400 units per month. We size every system after a site survey so the capacity matches your actual roof conditions and household load.

Inverter conversion and home use

Raw DC power from panels cannot run your fridge, AC, or washing machine. An inverter sits between the panels and your home switchboard, converting DC into 230V AC. This conversion happens continuously during daylight.

Once converted, the AC electricity flows into your home wiring. Your appliances draw from this solar supply first. If your panels produce 1.5 kW at noon and your running load is 1 kW, the full 1 kW comes from solar. The remaining 0.5 kW has nowhere to go inside the house, so it moves to the next stage.

Export, net metering, and billing

Surplus electricity travels through your net meter and into the utility grid. The meter spins backward (or logs export units digitally), giving you a credit. At billing time, your DISCOM subtracts exported units from imported units. You pay only for the net difference.

Net metering approval is part of the installation process. We handle the DISCOM paperwork and grid connection so you do not need to navigate regulatory steps alone. Once the meter is commissioned, the cycle repeats every sunny day: generate, self consume, export the rest.

On cloudy days or at night, your home draws power from the grid as usual. Because an on grid system has no battery, it also switches off during a power cut to protect utility workers on the line. For most Indian households focused on bill savings, this setup delivers the best payback without the added cost of battery storage.

Understanding this simple loop, sunlight to panel to inverter to home to grid, helps you evaluate system sizes, compare quotes, and set realistic savings expectations. Every decision that follows, whether it is choosing between a 3 kW and 5 kW system or comparing financing options, builds on this foundation.
